The Conservation Management Plans (CMPs) set out the policy framework for the long-term conservation and management of the historic huts of the Ross Sea region, their associated structures and features, and the surrounding historic cultural landscape.
As the Trust’s principal guidance documents, they guide the care of each hut, its setting and its artefact collection, and provide a basis for consistent decision-making as environmental conditions, visitation and nearby operational activity continue to evolve.
Second Edition – Conservation Management Plans
Several years of consultation, work, and international peer review has gone into the preparation of the Trust’s second edition CMPs, which update the original Conservation Management Plans published over 20 years ago in the mid-2000’s. They acknowledge the preservation work of early hut caretakers and conservation personnel and reflect nearly four decades of conservation work led by the Trust, focussed in the latter two decades through the Ross Sea Heritage Restoration Project.
The CMPs align with Antarctic Treaty System requirements, including the ASPA Management Plans, and with recognised international conservation practice. They take an evidence-led approach that prioritises the retention of authentic fabric, the least possible intervention, and thorough documentation.
The second edition CMPs for the Ross Island expedition bases of Scott, Shackleton and Hillary will be available on our website in November 2026.
