Still Life

Inside the Antarctic Huts of Scott and Shackleton

The Trust has enjoyed considerable success with Still Life: Inside the Antarctic Huts of Scott and Shackleton, the book by photographer Jane Ussher and the Antarctic Heritage Trust’s Executive Director.

The Trust has also turned that partnership into an inspiring exhibition of the same name. STILL LIFE, the exhibition, is a unique visual and sensory experience that takes the viewer inside the historic huts of heroic polar explorers Captain Robert Falcon Scott and Sir Ernest Shackleton.

Created by Jane Ussher, with support from the Antarctic Heritage Trust, the timed sensory experience allows visitors to step inside a specially designed cube to become immersed in Jane Ussher’s large-scale, wall-projected images. This experience captures the landscape of Antarctica and the isolation endured by the heroic early explorers.

Still Life at the Australian National Maritime Museum 2015

As part of the Antarctic Heritage Trust’s commemoration of Ernest Shackleton’s 1914-1917 centenary, the Trust partnered with the Australian National Maritime Museum (ANMM), Sydney to bring STILL LIFE to Australia for the first time.

While STILL LIFE: Inside the Antarctic Huts of Scott and Shackleton was a stand-alone exhibition, it complimented ANMM’s Shackleton: Escape from Antarctica exhibition.

STILL LIFE ran from 2 April 2015 – 1 September 2015.

Still Life at Auckland Museum 2014

The Antarctic Heritage Trust partnered with Auckland Museum and Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development to create a new exhibition based around Jane Ussher’s evocative series of STILL LIFE images. Standing at the heart of the exhibition was the STILL LIFE immersive experience.

Visitors also encountered rarely seen Antarctic objects from Auckland Museum’s collections which further helped to tell the story of what it was like to live, work, and play in the earth’s southern-most continent. The exhibition ran from 26 August – 5 October 2014.

Still Life at NZ IceFest 2012

STILL LIFE was the centrepiece of the Christchurch City Council’s inaugural Antarctic festival, NZ IceFest, a biennial celebration of New Zealand’s connection with Antarctica, held in Christchurch, New Zealand in 2012.

The exhibition was made possible at the festival with support from the Christchurch City Council, The Rata Foundation and The Lion Foundation
