Antarctic Heritage Trust invites you to

A Musical Journey to Antarctica

with Antarctic Heritage Trust Inspiring Explorer Ihlara McIndoe

Antarctic Heritage Trust invites you to watch A Musical Journey to Antarctica, featuring five compositions by Inspiring Explorer Ihlara McIndoe accompanied by stunning visuals of Antarctica captured by renowned Antarctic filmmaker and photographer Anthony Powell.

Ihlara was the NZSO National Youth Orchestra Composer-in-residence for 2021. Her beautiful compositions for flute, violin and viola, and full orchestra, were inspired by her participation in Antarctic Heritage Trust’s 2020 Inspiring Explorers Expedition™ to Antarctica.

Performers at the concert include Mark Menzies, Professor of Music and Head of Performance at the University of Canterbury on viola and violin, UC performance students Rakuto Kurano on violin, and Marlene Cooper on flute, and Chris Everest from the New Zealand School of Music on guitar.

This concert took place at The Piano in Christchurch, New Zealand and was livestreamed on 12 May 2022.
The recording of the livestream is available to watch here.

More About Ihlara McIndoe

Ihlara is a multi-talented young woman, having been selected as the NZSO National Youth Orchestra Composer-in-residence for 2021, she also completed her first year working as a lawyer in 2021 for a large firm based in Wellington.

Ihlara completed her Bachelor of Music at the University of Otago in 2019 studying piano with Terence Dennis and composition with Anthony Ritchie and Peter Adams, with additional mentorship from Mozart Fellows Chris Gendall and Dylan Lardelli. Ihlara’s studies also included a Bachelor of Law and a Bachelor of the Arts (Hons) in Gender Studies. She has a keen interest in the roles and responsibilities of statutorily created arts organisations, intellectual property within contemporary music, and gender equity issues in music.

In 2020, Ihlara travelled to the Antarctic Peninsula on an Antarctic Heritage Trust Inspiring Explorers Expedition™. While there, Ihlara collected sound samples of water, ice, wind, and wildlife and has used these recordings directly in one of her five compositions, with the other works in the series inspired more broadly by her time in Antarctica.

Ihlara says, “My experience with the Antarctic Heritage Trust introduced me to the concepts of exploration and preservation (from an environmental and Antarctic history perspective) as inspirations for composition.”

Her compositions have been performed in New Zealand, Australia, and Japan by artists including the Argonaut Ensemble, Mark Menzies, Nathaniel Otley, Dylan Lardelli, Mayumi Miyata, Nanae Yoshimura, the NZSO, NZ Trio, Orchestra Wellington, and the Dunedin Youth Orchestra.  Upcoming performances of Ihlara’s work include a new commission for leading New Zealand new music ensemble Stroma in Te Whanganui-a-Tara in late May, and a new string quartet to be performed at the Banff Centre for the Arts, Canada, in July.

Anthony grew up on a farm in Taranaki, New Zealand. He worked for many years as a Communications Technician and Satellite Engineer in Antarctica for both New Zealand’s Scott Base, and the United States’ McMurdo Station, before transitioning to becoming a full-time filmmaker for the last 10 years.

He married his wife Christine in Antarctica in 2003. Christine is from Orange County California; she was working at McMurdo Station while he was working at Scott Base. He has now spent roughly 10 years physically in Antarctica including 10 winters, when the bases endure months of unending darkness.

Over the years Anthony has utilised his technical background to design and build many camera systems that can still function in the extreme cold of the Antarctic winter. He has also created specialised camera systems for Antarctic researchers.
