This edition of The Explorer showcases significant leadership transitions, with Sir Jerry Mateparae taking the helm as Trust Chair following Mark Stewart’s departure after twelve years of distinguished service. We recognise Mark’s pivotal role in expanding the Trust’s mission and driving innovation, particularly in developing the Inspiring Explorers™ programme.
The Trust celebrates the opening of Into Ocean & Ice at the New Zealand Maritime Museum, featuring works by four Inspiring Explorers™ from the 2023 South Georgia expedition. This exhibition connects contemporary Antarctic experiences with Shackleton’s legacy through various artistic mediums, running until August 2025.
On-Ice conservation efforts continue with teams deployed to Ross Island and Cape Adare. Archaeological assessments are underway at historic sites including Shackleton’s Nimrod hut, while crucial safety assessments at Cape Adare mark progress toward conserving Antarctica’s first permanent dwelling. The Trust is completing a comprehensive rewrite of Conservation Management Plans, ensuring future protection of the historic explorer bases.
The Trust’s innovative virtual reality experience of Scott’s Discovery Hut is touring around New Zealand, offering immersive exploration of Antarctic heritage. Additionally, a new partnership with Generator Talent launches the Explorer’s Mindset Leadership Programme, utilising Antarctic exploration history for corporate leadership development.
Eight young explorers have been selected for the tenth Inspiring Explorers Expedition™, departing for the Ross Sea region in January 2025. This expedition will visit the historic explorer bases under the Trust’s care and includes a special task to repatriate a historic copy of The Count of Monte-Cristo to Scott’s Discovery hut.
The Trust is seeking applications for governance intern positions, with opportunities for aspiring directors to join the Board.
