This edition of The Explorer highlights a workshop convened by the Trust to update Conservation Management Plans for the historic huts we care for on Ross Island. This initiative aims to safeguard the huts by ensuring the plans remain aligned with contemporary international conservation policies and adaptable to future challenges.
Former Governor-General of New Zealand Rt Hon Sir Jerry Mateparae has joined the Trust’s Board as an Independent Trustee, bringing a wealth of experience in public service and leadership. The Trust also hosted an Explorer Conference, encouraging students to cultivate an ‘explorer mindset’ with speakers emphasising curiosity, resilience, and teamwork.
In the upcoming summer conservation season, a team will work on monitoring and maintaining Ross Island historic sites, including an archaeologist focused on assessing large new artefactual deposits at Cape Evans. The Trust will also collaborate with the UKAHT to preserve sites on the Antarctic Peninsula.
The Trust introduces the 22-member Inspiring Explorers™ team embarking on an expedition to South Georgia Island, to honour the centenary of Sir Ernest Shackleton’s final expedition. The diverse team includes climbers attempting the first Kiwi ascent of Mount Worsley, guided by renowned mountaineering experts Lydia Bradey and Dean Staples.
A new virtual reality project will recreate Captain Scott’s 1902 Discovery hut, providing global access to this historic site. Additionally, an exclusive interview with distinguished climate scientist George Denton brings together history, science, and exploration to provide invaluable insights into our planet’s future.
