Our colleagues at the UK Antarctic Heritage Trust have completed one of their most ambitious conservation projects yet, at Blaiklock Island Refuge – a hut frozen in time in Marguerite Bay on the Antarctic Peninsula.
The Trust’s team began with conservation tasks in Hillary’s TAE/IGY hut and conservation treatment of artefacts while at New Zealand’s Scott Base, before deploying to Shackleton’s hut at Cape Royds.
The eight young explorers were tasked with returning a classic book to the icy continent and hoped conditions would permit them to get to the base where heroic era explorers had read it, Scott’s Discovery hut at Hut Point on Ross Island.
This was the first time the Trust has taken young explorers to experience the legendary Antarctic explorers’ bases and understand the Trust’s conservation of them.
Antarctic Heritage Trust Chair Sir Jerry Mateparae views the icy continent the same way he views the world.
“It’s a place where there is so much to learn about our history and science, for today and tomorrow,” he says.
Twenty-two young New Zealanders travelled with the Trust to South Georgia in October 2023 for our ninth Inspiring Explorers Expedition™ as part of the Shackleton Centenary Year Expedition.
The Trust’s On-Ice Conservation team spent thirteen weeks in Antarctica this season, from early November until late January, undertaking an intensive digital data capture project, followed by the annual conservation programme at the historic Ross Island explorer bases of Captain Robert Falcon Scott, Sir Ernest Shackleton, and Sir Edmund Hillary.
An ambitious project in a particularly challenging environment has succeeded thanks to the long-term partnership between two organisations on opposite sides of the globe.
